Minting Process: Creating the Billet
creating the billet

The molten silver is poured into cylindrical molds to create a “billet” that can weigh several hundred ounces. They are turned out of the mold and set aside to cool. These silver billets are re-heated by electromagnetic induction for about 15 minutes to more than 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit just before being sent to the extruder.

Gold is not cast into billets but poured into a long, flat mold, then squeezed between two rollers to achieve the correct thickness.
