Minting Process: Rolling

Strips Are Rolled
Once the long, thin strips of extruded metal have cooled, they are trimmed using a hydraulic shearer and prepared for rolling. The strips of metal are individually fed into a high-pressure rolling machine and rolled down to the exact thickness required to achieve the proper size-to-weight ratio so the pressed medallion will meet certified specifications.

After each strip has been rolled, it is inspected to ensure that it meets the specifications for thickness using a highly precise instrument called a micrometer. The thickness must be exact because precious metals are sold by the troy ounce.

Next, the strips are and gathered and sent to the blanking machine.
